Stage 3 - August 21: Coevorden - Denekamp, 86 km
Zabel steps up

Telekom's Erik Zabel has broken Alessandro Petacchi's hold in the Ronde van Nederland, winning the third stage between Coevorden and Denekamp this morning. Zabel, who was second in the first two stages, beat home Australians Robbie McEwen (Lotto-Domo) and Bradley McGee (FDJeux.com) to take the win. Petacchi finished 18th, but kept the orange leader's jersey.
Today's stage was only 86 kilometres, in view of the 23 km time trial this afternoon. The non-starters were Tyler Hamilton (CSC), who severely wounded his hand after crashing yesterday, and Leon van Bon (Lotto-Domo), who was sick. The pace was high from the start as expected, with 45 kilometres covered in the first hour. The first break came after 24 km when Marco Velo (Fassa), Steven de Jongh (Rabobank), Ludo Dierckxsens (Landbouwkrediet), Tom Boonen (Quick.Step), Jans Koerts (BankGiroLoterij) and Rene Andrle (ONCE) attacked, but a determined chase by US Postal brought them back after only a few kilometres. The time bonus sprint in Emlichheim after 33.7 kilometres was won by Tom Boonen in front of Francesco Chicchi (Fassa) and Bram Schmitz (BankGiroLoterij).
A break of 16 riders, including race leader Petacchi, managed to get clear for a while, despite a hard chase from the peloton. They were caught but Angel Vicioso (ONCE) stayed in front and managed to get a 1'05 gap before he began to be pulled back. With 15 km to go, the Spaniard's lead was down to 40 seconds and he was caught with 9 km to go. The peloton remained together after that with Erik Zabel claiming the stage win in Denekamp ahead of McEwen and McGee.
This afternoon's time trial will be ridden over 23 km between Nordhorn (just inside the German border) and Denekamp over a flat parcours.
