Stage 4b - August 30: Zug - Zug ITT, 23.8 km

Goussev doubles and moves into yellow

The second part of the fourth stage on Saturday afternoon was an individual time trial over 23.8 kilometres in the area of Zug. It was a pure demonstration of the outstanding qualities of Vladimir Goussev, the reigning Russian time trial champion and winner of the bronze medal at the European Championships in this discipline in Athens two weeks ago. The rider from Novograd was a level above the rest and not unexpectedly, he took the overall lead in the GP Tell. The lion hearted Swiss hope Florian Stalder performed well and thanks to his second place in the ITT he moved up to third on GC.

The weather god was with the riders, when the skies cleared after the heavy rain showers during the lunch time break. So the whole peloton could perform in dry and sometimes even sunny conditions. This was a lucky, because the ITT around Zug was full of corners and was very demanding on the riders as far as technical skills were concerned.

The Swiss rider Floran Stalder has now a great chance to confirm his place on the podium. He could have done even better his race, but five kilometres before the finish he was forced to slam on the brakes after a dog had crossed his path. Although he is well placed on GC, Stalder remains restrained: "Nothing is done yet. I have to reckon with many attacks by the riders from Kazakhstan during the last stage tomorrow," he said, referring to his small lead of only seven seconds to the rider in 4th place overall, the Kazakh Assan Bazayev.

Previous leader Tomas Nose from Slovenia also rode a good TT. He finished third place in the stage but lost one minute too many and is now second on GC.

On the same course the Swiss Championship of "hand-cycling" (wheelchair-users) was held. Franz Nietlispach, a 14-time gold medallist at the Paralympics won the race in a time of 48 minutes. With this performance he was slower by just 15 minutes than the quickest U23 rider. Would you believe it?
