Saturn dominates men, Jeanson too strong on the climb

With a quick tempo begun at the base of the final climb, Team Saturn put their best feet forward Thursday, bringing Nathan O'Neill his second stage victory of the Redlands Classic, and giving him the overall leader's jersey.

"I said to Chris (Horner) 'I don't want to be riding tempo too much,' because Chris was in the jersey and we didn't have anybody but Tom (Danielson) for the climb," said O'Neill. "My philosophy is, first you do your job for the team, then you worry about yourself."

O'Neill was part of a select five-man group that was all that remained of the field after 90 miles of racing. Trek-VW All Star Roland Green, Jonathan Vaughters (Prime Alliance), and Saturn teammates Horner and Danielson had been delivered to the climb in a solid combined effort by HealthNet and Saturn at the end of the final feed zone.

The race began in cool, sunny weather, with a lot less wind than in years past. Schroeder Iron put men forward before the first sprint to try and lead out for Miguel Meza. Instead, Gord Fraser (HealthNet) took the points, with Brent Dawson (Jelly Belly ) in third.

As the road began crawling out from under itself, it screwed through the backside of some industrial parks and industrial park workers on their coffee breaks, stretching the peloton like an accordion file and jamming the race caravan together in the turns. A break of 42 seconds was established when David Clinger (Prime Alliance), Mike Sayers (HealthNet), and Adam Livingston (Schroeder Iron) worked together on a long palm-lined straightaway. Prime Alliance began moving lieutenants up to assist Clinger, sending Michael Creed and Alex Candelario across, with John Lieswyn (7Up-Maxxis) in tow. As Horner soon came along, too, at the entrance to a two-lap circuit of Lake Matthews, Prime Alliance was driving the break, making yellow jersey Horner race.

When the field caught the away riders just prior to the first feed zone, two relatively innocuous riders on the GC attacked and managed to slip away. Aaron Olsen (Schroeder Iron) and Wes Seigler (Team West Virginia) put their noses out into the wind and were soon sniffing clean, fresh air.

"I saw Aaron go, I followed his wheel, and the next thing you know we were up the road," said Seigler. "The group sat up a bit and we drove pretty hard. It wasn't so bad, and we kept lasting and lasting."

The two were of less than paramount concern to the field, and were thus allowed to get away by two minutes and forty three seconds and collect KOM and sprint points as HealthNet and Saturn controlled things behind.

"HealthNet got some help from us yesterday and we got some help from them today," said Horner. "It was perfect for us to let two guys go up the road and much easier for our guys to control the race."

Seigler and Olsen were away for 45 miles and almost two hours. Olsen began fading on a climb just after the second feed zone, and Seigler soloed down the descent, hitting close to 50 mph as he left the nasty moonscape of the town of Cajalco behind.

At the third and final feed zone the group was compact and Seigler faded back to find some food and his place in a hard-tempo peloton fast on the uptake before a long and decisive climb.

"It was good to be with Aaron," said Seigler. "He is a strong guy and I needed him in the flats. I knew I was going to be dead on the last climb, so I tried to get as far up the road as I could."

When Saturn took command and crossed Interstate 10, the preliminary rolling roads before the Oak Glen climb were being strafed by a powerful crosswind. After a day of almost nothing, gusts absolutely perpendicular to the riders pushed men all across the road. Saturn set up a six-man wide echelon across the front, and all behind them played gutterball to catch up.

The field was beginning to splinter and Saturn's tempo was working. Prime Alliance's strongest men were just behind the yellow and red machine and waiting. Danny Pate was just off Vaughters' shoulder.

As the road steepened and the pace at the front would not relent, what was once a remarkable field of 40 was whittled down to an outstanding 20, then a triumphant 10, followed by an elite five.

With three kilometers to go a crest appeared, followed by a short dip, another crest and then an uphill to the end. Saturn was flying.

"I cruised over that," said O'Neill. "And when the road started going uphill again, I just started digging in. I looked around and someone said 'you've got 100 meters to go' and there was no one on my wheel. Chris was yelling 'wait up, wait up', so I just backed off and we crossed the line together."

Back behind them the battle for third was between Green and Vaughters. Horner had been waiting with them to cover and counter any attacks on O'Neill. He rolled around them when it became clear they had no intention of doing so.

"Once Horner was clear, I knew there was a time bonus for third," said Green. "So I just put it in the big ring and went for it."

Women: Moto mix-up no barrier for the Machine from Lachine

The women's race was marred by a miscue in the motorcycle escort caravan at the most inopportune of moments. With just 10km to go before the base of the final climb, Kim Bruckner (T-Mobile), Genevieve Jeanson (Rona-Esker) and Manon Jutras (Saturn) were a minute thirty ahead of the field and closing hard on Dede Barry (T-Mobile).

"We were just trying to make Genevieve work," said Bruckner. "She got on, but there was a gap and she just started pulling."

The motos leading the chasers turned left, leaving the course and leading them the wrong way. As soon as this was realized, a mad but sensible scramble by race officials to neutralize the race began, and the break was motorpaced back up the road until their gap was reestablished. But with the climb fast approaching, the fire in the belly of the chase seemed to flicker and fade.

"We were reestablishing the gap and (Genevieve) rolls up to me and says 'Are you going to roll through?'" said Bruckner. "I said 'I can't beat you up the climb... No... I'm not going to roll through.' So then she just kind of sat there. That didn't really work."

Jeanson leads

Prior to all that, as the women's race began around Lake Mitchell and chased the men's race back through the spring fields of California's Inland Empire, a two-woman break formed early. Dede Barry was away with Ina Teutenberg (Saturn) for most of the day, and when Teutenberg dropped back, Barry was left all to her own devices up front. Barry's presence on GC pressured Jeanson back in the field and caused her team to chase.

"The goal was to make (Rona) work as hard as possible, and I did," said Barry. "They had to pull in front all day. I made one last attack with 10km to go in the hopes that I could do a little bit more work. I was just surprised at how strong Genevieve was. She was just so powerful today. There was nothing we could do to stop her."

Jeanson's breakaway group joined Barry at the base of the climb, and together alone the women's race entered the Oak Glen road.

Almost finished

"To make a long race short," said Jeanson, "my team died for me on the road today. They controlled the race with a breakaway that lasted almost the entire day. They kept the time difference small enough so that at the beginning of the climb I was positioned to win the race. At the bottom of the climb I said 'My team did an awesome job and now I'm going to win it for them.'"

Jeanson bolted ahead. There is no other word for it. She picked up, shifted gears and bolted. Uphill. Nothing Bruckner or Jutras or eventually Lynn Bessette could do was strong enough to keep up. The Machine from Lachine slid up the surface of the road and won by a hard margin. Bruckner finished second, Jutras was third, with Bessette having been tasked to mark Amber Neben (T-Mobile) before coming around her in fourth.
