Jan Ullrich (Team Coast) has taken his first victory in one and a half years, winning the 95 year old German classic Rund um Köln. Ullrich attacked with 53 kilometres to go in the 202 kilometre race to win solo by 1'52 in front of Danilo Hondo (Telekom) and last year's winner Peter Wrolich (Gerolsteiner). At an average speed of over 44 km/h, this win was no fluke, and proved that Ullrich is indeed on the right comeback road.

"It's like a miracle," a delighted Ullrich said at the finish. "I am unbelievably happy. Our tactic worked completely, I was able to protect myself in the first kilometres, and had good legs the whole time."

"Never before have I won a race this early in the season, but this is not a World Cup race," added Ullrich. "In my comeback I made up my mind to work seriously. I've learned from the faults I made and I state that I have to work hard and hurt myself."

A massive crowd turned out on Easter Monday in Köln to watch the 1997 Tour winner ride in his first race on German soil since 2001. The 29 year old did not disappoint, helping to chase down a 13 man break that had lasted for around 70 kilometres. Ullrich was third over the top of the fifth mountain climb in Overath-Ferrenberg, which saw the peloton stretched to breaking point.

With 70 kilometres to go, Ullrich turned on the gas on a small climb just before the sixth mountain climb at Biesfeld, eventually causing a 22 man selection to form. It was from this group that Ullrich put in his final and decisive attack with 53 kilometres to go. The blue clad rider powered along on his own, getting a 40 second gap in six kilometres. That's all he needed and increased it to two then three minutes as he crossed the finish line with 20 and 10 kilometres to go. His final advantage was 1'52 to the Danilo Hondo led chase group, which had no answer to Jan Ullrich today.

Ullrich's next race will be La Flèche Wallonne on Wednesday, before resting up for Liege-Bastogne-Liege and more than likely the Rund um den Henninger Turm on May 1.
