Vasseur solos to Isbergues win

By Chris Henry

Cédric Vasseur (Cofidis) built on his strong performance in last week's GP Fourmies with a win in today's Grand Prix d'Isbergues. The race represents the 14th round of the Coupe de France series, run over a distance of 198km. Vasseur escaped within 5km of the finish, leaving behind breakaway companions Ludovic Capelle and Mark Scanlon, both of Ag2R.

Bonjour's Sylvain Chavanel, often active in the Coupe de France races, went on the attack early and escaped after just 20km with Nico Eeckhout of Lotto. The two gained a maximum advantage of around three minutes, before being reeled in. Vasseur was next to raise the stakes, attacking with fellow Frenchman Laurent Estadieu (Ag2R) on the Côte de Sachin, before being joined by ten others on the subsequent climb of the Côte de Floringhen.

The twelve leaders maintained their advantage over the peloton until the race's two finishing circuits, where Vasseur once again helped provoke a split. This time the protagonists up front numbered six, as Vasseur was joined by Frédéric Amorison (Lotto), Pierrick Fredigo (Credit Agricole), Baden Cooke (FDJeux.com), and Ag2R's Capelle and Scanlon.

Confident after his third place last weekend behind Bortolami and Jalabert, Vasseur tried his luck and came up a winner, jumping past the 5km to go banner and holding off the other five. Ludovic Capelle led in teammate and stagiaire Scanlon 23 seconds later.

In the general classification of the Coupe de France, Bonjour's Franck Bouyer remains atop the standings with 136 points, ahead of Jean Delatour's Laurent Lefèvre and FDJeux.com's Nicolas Vogondy.
