Bartoli triumphs again

Fontanelli falls within sight of victory

Michele Bartoli (Fassa Bortolo) has added his name to the long list of winners in Italy's oldest classic, Milan-Turin. Bartoli was the best of the bunch of 28 riders that reached the finish line in Turin's "Fausto Coppi" velodrome, outsprinting Swiss Oscar Camenzind (Phonak) and Italian Gabriele Missaglia (Lampre). He was helped by a bit of bad luck involving Fabiano Fontanelli, who was leading by 7 seconds with one kilometre to go, but fell when he entered the velodrome.

The in form Bartoli was overlooked by Franco Ballerini for the Italian World's team that was successful in Zolder, but he refused to be drawn into any debate. "I have no regrets and have never had any these past days," he said to La Gazzetta dello Sport. "Not even after seeing the triumph of the azzurri on TV. I travel my own road and my aim is only to do well at my job, the rest doesn't interest me. I am happy when I succeed, like this time and the previous ones. I came from an accident and a break of three months. A period of regaining form was unavoidable."

Bartoli's next goal is the Giro di Lombardia on Saturday, in which he will be one of the top favourites.

The race started with an attack from Bram de Groot (Rabobank) at kilometre 18. He was allowed to get clear by the peloton, and covered an impressive 47.2 kilometres in the first hour. After 40 kilometres, there was a counter attack by Domenico Gualdi (Formaggi Trentini), who also succeeded in breaking free of the peloton. De Groot reached his maximum lead of 11'15 by 57 kilometres, while Gualdi couldn't get closer than 6'30 (km 49) and was caught by the peloton at km 95.

The Saeco and Fassa Bortolo teams started to control the race from that point, gradually bringing down the lead of Bram de Groot to a more manageable level. At 140 km he still had 4'40, but 20 km later his escape was over, having spent 142 km in the lead.

With 20 km to go on the climb of Superga there was an attack by David Millar (Cofidis) and Juan Antonio Flecha (iBanesto), but the peloton was not going to let them go far. The pair reached a maximum lead of 15" as behind them a bagarre started on the climb, with around 30 riders making the selection. The group included the usual Italian suspects, Bartoli, Rebellin, Casagrande, Frigo, Simoni, Basso, Fontanelli, as well as Camenzind, Millar, Mancebo, Beloki, Hamburger, Bruylandts, Azevedo, Beltran, Zulle amongst others.

Over the top, a group of six riders went clear: Simoni, Bartoli, Barbero, Beloki, Casagrande and Beltran, but a determined chase by the peloton brought them back with 10 km to go. A 9 km to go, Barbero attacked in the company of Fontanelli, Basso, Hamburger and Missaglia, with Fontanelli going solo a few km later on the descent. The Mercatone Uno rider looked to have the race won when he still had 7 seconds with 1 kilometre to go, but unfortunately he fell when he entered the velodrome and his victory chances vanished. The bunch sprint that ensued was won by a strong Michele Bartoli, beating Oscar Camenzind and Gabriele Missaglia.
