Australian team report

By Brian Stephens, AIS U23 coach

On Sunday the AIS Mapei Aqua team rode an Under 23 World Cup race at Col San Martino in Northern Italy. The course consisted of 3 laps of a flat circuit of 14.4 km followed by 6 laps of a very tough 18.9 km circuit making 155 km.

Jeremy Yates got onto the offensive from soon after the start and was joined by 2 others to set up an advantage of just over a minute at the 1st climb. He rode away from his companions on the climb but then took a wrong turn and was left well behind the chasing bunch by the time he rejoined the circuit.

The field was reduced each time they traversed the testing climb but surprisingly the finish was decided by a 35 man sprint. Our best was consistent new rider to the program, Dave McPartland finishing 29th. The winner was Mirko Lorenzetto from team Marchiol Hit.
