PrestigeVC.com/Viner/MAR Support Services Eelmore Circuit Race #2

May 12, 2004

By Gary Kristensen

A relatively mild and still night greeted the 50+ riders that made the effort to race at Eelmore tonight. With some hassle from lads on motocross bikes, which were eventually seen off, the racing got under way on time on the freshly swept surface.

Youths

First off were the four Youths that had signed on and the winner, Gareth Dickinson, rode to the win as a warm up to the 3/4 event. Second in was Toby Meadows, while Rob Jackson and Andrew Ferris fought a close sprint for 3rd and 4th, with the former coming off best. Andrew Bates, aka "Sweetheart" was noticeable by his absence, so I promised him I'd let everyone know his nickname if he didn't turn up to race!!!

3/4/W/V/J

A few riders attempted to get away from the relatively large field of 35, but VC Meudon were out in force and en masse and they closed down just about every move, knowing they had a few big guns ready for the sprint! International triathlete Richard Stannard tried a few times to get away alone, but were the mind is willing, the legs soon find out how hard it is out there alone with a bit of a wind in your face! So, it came down to a judges nightmare with a massed sprint, which was eventually sorted out by the judges. Hugo Robbins just snatched it from Steve Ferris, two "more mature" (read OLD!!) riders showing the younger chaps a thing or two in the gallop, with Richard Stannard a well deserved third for his earlier breakaway efforts. Rides of the night must go to novices Adam Witherington and Nikki Wadham who, although off the back from the start and getting lapped more than once or twice, stuck at it to the finish. Well done to them, hopefully they know were they stand now and we'll see them back for even more of a flogging next week!

E/1/2

It was pretty evident from the start that Paul Pickup meant business tonight and he was seen off the front alone more than once before the rest eventually gave up and let him go with 11 laps to go. With last weeks winner and team mate Lee Day marking the moves in the chasing pack, Pickup put his head down and got on with it, winning with a good 30 second margin over the fast closing bunch who were obviously intent on second to tenth only! In the gallop it was again Liphook Cycles RT who came up trumps, with sprinter Lee Day reaping the benefits of having Paul out front all evening. It was very close mind you, so another headache for the judges, but the promoting clubs Chris Tune just missed out, followed by regular rider Justin Hoy and another from Prestige, Tom Smith.

Thanks again to the helpers, judges, sweepers, camera operators and general dog's bodies including Kat, Lorraine, Abi, Rob, Brian, Paul's Dad (whose name I forgot!) and anyone else who helped in any way whatsoever.

We also had a visit from Veloriders royalty in the form of Tim Cooper who was working locally and decided it was better than watching the Brit Soap awards. Nice to meet you mate!
