Another hot and balmy evening greeted the riders signing on tonight, and the action was hot too, so let's get straight to the action!

Youths

The same faces signed on, with James Boyman riding for a warm up to the senior 3/4 event, he rode steady and still won easily, but then again you'd expect that from a kid of his ability. Keep an eye out for this boy! Toby Meadows was consistent with another second place and Rob Jackson keeps beating (just) Andrew Ferris.

Although he left the signing on right to the last minute, young superstar Lewis Atkins left the rest in no doubt as to his standard and ability. Riding as a 1st year junior, he has had numerous wins on both road and track this year and should certainly be making the talent team/WCPP sit up and take notice. If they are not then something has to be wrong with the system in the case of this highly talented, well motivated, disciplined and generally all round nice lad, who seems to have his head screwed on, feet on the ground and a pleasant attitude to boot. His dad, Phil, usually provides a mean lead out on the track, but tonight he didn't need his help.

After being away with Keir O'Donnell, 27 seconds up for the last 10 or so laps and assured of at least second place if they were to keep riding as fluidly as they were, he found himself alone with 4 laps to go when Keir punctured. With no lap out within the last 5, it was curtains for the winner of the past two events, so watch out next week for some revenge riding! Lewis rode strong and steady to cross the line well in advance of the massed bunch sprint. Special mention goes to my mate Daz Bosher who experienced bunched racing for the first time tonight. He's usually one of those triathlon nerds and does hockey to a high standard (yes he does wear a skirt!!!), but he stuck in for 10 or so laps and then got into a little group and rode the whole distance as a "mega fartlek workout" in his words! If only more riders took this attitude instead of packing after a few laps! Well done mate. Oh and SHAVE YOUR BLIMMIN LEGS!!!

Probably after reading previous reports, another rider attempted to bang off the front as that has how the race has been won quite a few times this year, but this time it was Veloriders main man Martin Hulbert, who then proceeded to die a horrible death when he realised that the headwind up the home straight was in fact HARD AS NAILS!!! He was last seen pinging off the back and grouping up to ride together with the other sufferers! The race soon split under the pressure of attacks, mainly from Lee Day, who is looking ever stronger week by week. In Paul Pickup he also has a good team mate and foil, as many are watching Mr Pickup, while Lee attacks and goes up the road! In the front split there were 2 Liphook Cycles RT (Paul and Lee), 2 Evans RT (Sam Gardner and John Veness), comeback man Adam Craig (VC Meudon), Paul Holdsworth (Hounslow & District CC) and Chris Minter (Pedalon.co.uk).

Nick Dawes (Team Luciano) had been involved earlier, but he found the pace too hot and was dropped and caught and dropped again by the organised chasing group! No matter how organised, and this week was probably the best chase group I've ever seen mustered in terms of everyone doing a tap and not missing a turn, they could not reel the leading group in to striking distance, though they did take a few seconds out of the 20 or so second lead in the last 5 laps, when the front runners were obviously lining themselves up for the run in to the bell lap. Taking his second win of the season here at Eelmore, Lee Day showed his strength in the gallop to cross the line first, closely followed by team mate Paul Pickup. A deserved win for Lee, especially as he had been forced to run the gravel when passing the 3/4's in the latter stages of the race.
