Star & Garter Tour de VineyardsNelson, New Zealand, January 1-4, 2004The stagesStage 1 - January 1: Trek Hope Circuit Stage 1 - January 1: Trek Hope CircuitA fine solo ride by Robin Reid, Marlborough, racing in temperatures in the high 20s, saw him safely in the Tour Leader's jersey, with a 1 minute cushion over Dayle Cheatly, Wanganui, and surprise third placed rider Aaron Tuckerman, Marlborough, at 1.45. Reid made his move as the flag dropped for the start, thinking positively that an early break of several strongmen in the race was sure to happen, he looked around after a kilometres, nobody on his wheel, so decided to give it his best shot, and was able to stay clear to the race finish, a fine performance of power riding not seen for many years in the Tour de Vineyards. The women's section of race 2 saw Commonwealth Games Pursuit Champion Sarah Ulmer outsprint Catherine Sell, Wanganui, Karen Hopkinson, Australia, Sarah Grab, Switzerland, and Susie Wood, Wellington, to lead the women's category, with the vets section Tour Leader Stuart Lowe, Christchurch, having a 12 second lead over Mark Coombe, Hastings, with Lester Settle in third place, and Clark Richards, former Tour of Queensland winner in 4th place. The Tour continues tomorrow with a 90 km slog from Richmond to St Arnuad in Nelson Lakes district. Stage 2 - January 2: Fifeshire FM Richmond-Lakes, 90 kmDay 2 in the Star & Garter Tour de Vineyards Fifeshire FM stage saw the leader's jersey change hands in all three divisions. Racing was held in scorching conditions with temperatures in the mid 30s, over a 90km course from Richmond to St Arnuad in the Lakes National Park of Nelson. First away from the sponsors premises The Star & Garter Cafe n Bar, after a welcome by the Mayor of Tasman John Hurley, were the Elite, Senior, U23 and U19 riders. A fast opening burst along the Hope straight and out to Wakefield for the sprint at 15km, taken by Alistair Duncan, part of an eight man break that included Logan Hutchings, Dayle Cheatley, Brad McFarlane, Adam Gosney, Robert Croft and Heath Blackgrove. This group stayed together at the first hill climb of Spooners Saddle, where 8 became 3 at the summit, Logan Hutchings, Alistair Duncan and Heath Blackgrove. Still together after 50k and approaching the nasty Kerrs Hill, where Logan Hutchings slipped off the pace, the remaining two riders went out to a 5 minute lead over the bunch at the summit. On to Tophouse with only 10 km to go, Alistair Duncan was not able to stay with the NZ road Champ and Heath Blackgrove went clear to hold out a fast finishing group of 10 riders to win the stage in front of a large crowd by 1.47 and take the leader's jersey by 30 seconds over Robin Reid who was 2nd in the bunch sprint, just edged out by Jeremy Yates. Rhys Tait was 4th and Aaron Tuckerman was 5th on the line. The women's race once again saw a new tour leader, with a class ride by Tour de Femme winner Nadine Boyle in finishing with the leading Vet bunch, and holding a 15 second lead from Sarah Grab (Switz), and Sarah Ulmer at 7.44. Steve Gurney won the 'full on' Vets race on the line from Lester Settle, the new leader on GC, with Gurney 2nd on GC +04, and Richard Naylor taking 3rd GC spot +39. The Vets sprint was won by Murray Peck, and the Women's sprint was taken by Karen Hopkinson (Aust). Stage 3 - January 3: Powerade Richmond-Takaka Hill, 130 kmIf the riders in this year's race thought conditions were hot yesterday at St.Arnuad in the Nelson Lakes district, the 130 km race today was raced in scorching temperatures, especially at the summit of the Marble Mountain Takaka Hill (698m) which was 32 degrees in the shade at the top. It was a real test of endurance for all the finishers. Taking out the $1000 prize for the first senior rider was 2001 tour winner Alistair Duncan from Christchurch, just edging out national road champion Heath Blackgrove by 15s, who picked up $500, and at 3.23 in third was day one tour leader Robin Reid who pocketed $250 at the end of the 16k climb. Stage 4 - January 4: Glovers Vineyard Hill Street CircuitAfter four days of intense competition raced in scorching conditions, National Road Champion Heath Blackgrove emerged as the 2004 Star & Garter Tour de Vineyards Champion, not content to sit back in the pack on the final 60k Glovers Vineyard Hill Street circuit race, he sprinted the big field to take 2nd place behind national U23 Champion Jeremy Yates, who rode clear on lap 9 of 12 to win the final stage by 13s, with 3rd going to David Cresswell, 4th Andrew Thompson U19, and in 5th spot Adam Gosney. The Vets race, over 40k was raced at a torrid pace, with 1st year Vet 1 rider Stuart Lowe attacking the bunch and riding clear with Dennis Cooper S&GW in the 5th lap of 8, to win by 21s from Dennis Cooper, in 3rd place was Tour Leader and Tour Winner Lester Settle, with Clark Richards in 4th place. The women's division of Race 2 was won by Sarah Ulmer, from Catherine Sell and Michelle Hyland, all three finishing in the bunch along with Women's Tour Leader and new Women's Tour Champion Nadine Boyle, and Susie Wood.
