Cyco Criterium Series #1Auckland, November 6, 2003The Cyco Criterium Series got underway in Auckland with a good turn out in both the A and B grades. Both races featured some fast attacking racing on the 1.3km Tank Farm circuit. The B grade race came down to a bunch sprint although it was a very strung out bunch by the last lap. One of the young New Caledonian riders currently in NZ showed his pace and took the sprint ahead of Andrew Seager and one of Auckland's top former junior riders Ben Peglar. In the A grade the race opened up fast with continued attacks until a break of 6 riders managed to go clear just before the first sprint at 10 minutes. The break hovered out in front for the rest of the race with Jonathan Atkinson taking the first sprint and Richard Bowker the second. With 5 laps to go the pace in the bunch wound up and the break was slowly reeled back but the bunch could not bridge the last 200m gap. With 3 to go Kieran Turner jumped across to the break and the bunch almost clawed them back. However, it wasnt to be and the seven riders were left to sort out the placings with Turner opening the sprint up before fading as Richard Bowker and Gordon Bearman dead heated for first with Atkinson taking third ahead of Turner and Walker Starr. ResultsA Grade 1= Gordon Bearman 1= Richard Bowker 3 Jonathan Atkinson 4 Kieran Turner 5 Walker Starr Primes: Jonathon Atchinson, Richard Bowker B Grade 1 Bonnemot Elonian 2 Andrew Seager 3 Ben Peglar Prime: Peter Sutherland |
