ORCA Urban Street Series Race #3

Newmarket, December 21, 2003

By Kieran Turner

The ORCA Urban Street Series finished up in Newmarket on Sunday with the hardest and fastest circuit of the three. It was a fitting finale to what has been one of the best race series held in this country for some time. The crowds lined the 720m course which had 6 tight corners to ensure the riders spent most of their time leaning their bikes from side to side.

To spice the finale of the A Grade up, title sponsor ORCA doubled the prize money on the day, which upped the ante as well as several egos in the field. Battling it out for the series win were Matt Yates and Richard Bowker. The rivalry became so intense during the race that it ended in blood - Yates'. Both riders tried to assert their dominance over each other, with Richard Bowker holding Yates up going into the very fast right hand corner, resulting in Yates going into the barriers and crashing out of the race. Along with Yates went Gordon Bearman, who unlike Yates was able to bounce back up and rejoin the race, if only to give Bowker the ear-bashing he deserved.

A fired-up Bearman ended up making the final break, which was an all-Auckland affair containing Bowker, Matt Gilbert and an improved Jonathan Atkinson. The four riders managed to hold off the field with Bowker taking the win ahead of Gilbert. The win also gave Bowker the series prize, but has clearly not enamoured himself with several of his fellow riders.

In the B grade race, 17 year-old Sam Bewley went on a mission after missing out on the win last week by the narrowest of margins. The lanky Bewley simply destroyed the field lapping everyone in the process, many twice. The chase was led by Mark Langlands, John Fitzpatrick and Sarah Ulmer. Ulmer in particular looked particularly classy sitting on the front and driving the chase group along. For his efforts Bewley took the win and the series prize.

Thomas Hanover completed a clean sweep in the Schools A division showing that he really is ready to step up and race with the elite riders. Whilst in the Schools B division Myron Simpson had too much gas for his fellow competitors.
