Bikes at the BeachRace 2 ORCA Urban Street Series #2, December 13, 2003Dean takes bunch finaleReport courtesy of cyclingnz.com Julian Dean claimed the Bikes at the Beach A grade race, showing the Takapuna crowd just why he is ranked number 45 in the world and one of the best bunch sprinters in Europe. He rode a low key race making sure he kept an eye on all the dangerous moves until two laps to go. By this stage the A grade field had been whittled down to a group of about 15 riders. The numerous attacks throughout the race and the testing circuit had taken its toll. Unlike last week no rider was able to dominate. Matt Yates was again very active as were Karl Murray, Tim Gudsell and Bryce Shapley. However, there was sufficient fire power in the bunch to ensure none of the breaks stuck. The fact that the circuit was incredibly quick made it all that much easy for gaps to be closed down very quickly. With two laps to go the field was all back together and everyone was intent on a bunch sprint. The pace continued to accelerate as everyone fought to be in the first three places as the finish came after a sharp right hand corner where only the first few around would be able to compete for the win. Julian Dean ghosted effortlessly into position and rounded the last corner perfectly to open it up and take a comfortable win ahead of Richard Bowker and Adam Coker.
