Prova do Memorial do Samora MachelMaputo, Mozambique, October 19 2003Sales wins inaugural Machel memorialBy Martin Hardie As cycling in Mozambique continues to emerge, with the country sending its first national veterans team to race in the recent Tour of Eden in South Africa, last Sunday saw the running of what is hoped to become an annual an annual event to be held to commemorate the assassination of former Mozambican President and revolutionary leader, Samora Moises Machel. Starting at the statue of Machel on the Praca do Independencia in downtown Maputo, the route traveled a rolling and at times rough course through some of the city's poorer districts before joining with the main EN4 freeway and looping back though Mozal and returning on the same route. The competitors had to endure cold, a little rain and 33 kph head- and cross-winds for much of the race before arriving at the uphill sprint finish, won by Paulo Sales.
