13th Trofeo David Susini
Tuscany, Italy, April 16, 2005
On Saturday the AIS Mapei Aqua Australian team was in Tuscany for an Under 23 National race, the Memorial David Susini. The team consisted of Chris Sutton (AIS/NSWIS), Nic Sanderson (AIS/VIS), Simon Clarke (AIS/VIS), Matt Rex (AIS/SASI), Sean Finning (AIS/VIS) and James Meadley (AIS/ACTAS). Matt Goss (AIS/TIS) had the day off due to illness. The race started in pouring rain and low temperatures, with the course over seven laps of a 23km course making a total distance of 161km.
Matt Rex went clear in the first 10km with two other riders. One of the escapees was dropped soon after, leaving just two riders in front until the 85km mark. From then on the race hotted up, and with the atrocious weather, some big crashes were the order of the day. Matt Rex was involved in the first of these and had to withdraw because of his injuries. He was taken to hospital and received eight stitches in his knee. Later in the race Chris Sutton also crashed but was able to remount and finish. Nic Sanderson got clear with a group of nine in the last 10km. They were caught with 500 metres to go but Nic still managed to run third in the bunch sprint which was lead out by Simon Clarke. The team all rode well again and covered every move all day.
