27th Trofeo LeoniAugust 3, 2003Sella attacks to solo win; Bates wins sprint for secondBy Brian Stephens, AIS Yesterday we raced the Trofeo Leoni, in Lazio near Rome. The AIS Mapei Aqua consisted of Gene Bates, Aaron Kemps, Jonathan Cantwell, David Betts, Lee Godfrey and Nic Sanderson. The course consisted of three climbs of which the 2nd and 3rd were pretty tough, followed by 11 laps of a 4km flat finish circuit. Gene Bates joined a group of 14 which went clear before the 2nd climb. Emanuele Sella, from the Italian National team, came across to this group on the climb and attacked them on the last climb, taking another rider, Boccialoni, with him. He attacked his partner on the finish circuit and stayed clear to win. Gene continued his good form to out sprint his 10 companions to take 2nd place from Aristide Ratti from the Italian National team.
