52nd Coppa BalleriniBergamo, April 5, 2003On the limit... then over the limitBy Brian Stephens, Australian U23 Team Manager The AIS Mapie Aqua Australian team raced two races on the weekend and both proved to be pretty tough. Saturday's race was the Trofeo Ballerini which is near Bergamo and consisted of four flat laps then a flat run to a tough circuit to be competed four times then return to the original circuit for a final lap. Our team consisted of Ashley Hutchinson, Peter Dawson, Aaron Kemps, David Betts, Bernard Sulzberger and Lee Godfrey. Things started out well with Aaron Kemps and Peter Dawson going after the intermediate sprint competition, which Peter finally won and Aaron was 2nd. The team ran into problems on the hilly circuit where the field split to pieces. With the very tight time limit, one by one the groups containing our guys were eliminated with Brendan Cato being the final one to go on the last climb. The race was won by the same guy that won last year, Grillo from Pagnoncelli. Results, 139 km1 Paride Grillo (Pagnoncelli-Fmb-Perrel) 3.26.00 (40,485 km/h) 2 Giacomo Vinoni (Viris Vigevano) 3 Elia Rigotto (Bassano) 4 Valery Dmitriev (Rus-Edile-Rosa Carni) 5 Luca Cappa (Bottoli-Artoni) 6 Mario Serpellini (Mantovani) 7 Stefano Lugana (Dellese-Feralpi) 8 Cristian Bonfanti (Bergamasca-For 3-Las) 9 Roberto Gotti (Bassano) 10 Gabriele Bosisio (Team Aurora)
