Annaclone Grand PrixAnnaclone, Northern Ireland, March 5, 2005Murphy wins Annaclone GPBy Shane Stokes Crannog Ireland rider Conor Murphy showed excellent early season form in the Annaclone Grand Prix on Saturday, dominating the event. A total of 82 riders signed on for the 40 mile event, with the field handicapped into three groups separated by five minutes. The opening laps saw a six man group go clear from the limit bunch and these riders - Ernie Magwood (East Tyrone), Stephen McKenna (East Antrim), Adam Petrie-Armstrong (Northern), Alaister Steele (unattached) Barry Mullin (Phoenix) and Gordon Scott (Kings Moss) actually started to draw clear of the middle group. Things looked good for the front runners, especially as the small eight man scratch group was making little impression on their lead. Frustrated by their lack of progress, Murphy jumped clear of the latter group and began to reel in all those in front. By the start of the final 8 mile lap, Murphy, Peter Hawkins (Castlereagh), Tim Walsh (Phoenix) and Karl Dolan were just 45 seconds down on the leaders, and the junction was soon made. A stomping Murphy then kicked once more with two miles remaining, reaching the line 36 seconds ahead of the Hawkins-led chasing bunch.
