Tour de MaskConnacht, Ireland, February 27, 2005Strong turnout for Tsunami cycle; Kelly wins Elite RaceGalway Bay rider Simon Kelly yesterday came out best at the end of the Tour de Mask, a season opener in Connacht, which was run as part of the Tsunami Charity Cycle programme. Kelly beat Western Lakes duo Martin Munroe and Padraig Marrey in the 80 kilometre race, with Jim McCulla (Donamon CC), Michael Devins (Eire Og CC) and Nigel Forde (Galway Bay) next across the line. A total of 82 riders lined out for the Western Lakes-run Tsunami cycle, which was aimed at leisure and competitive riders alike. The wide range of abilities was catered for by the holding of four separate events, which drew one of the biggest pre-season fields in several years. The first event was the 29 kilometre Tour de Partry, a 20 km loop from Partry, Ballintubber, Clonee and back to the finish in Partry. The Tour de Cara was double that distance and took the riders past Ballintubber and Ballintubber Abbey, along the Shores of Lough Cara to Carnaon and, from there, to Ballinrobe to the finish in Partry. The competitive Tour de Mask was a more testing 80 kilometre course, taking the riders on three laps of the Srah Mayo County council signed circuit plus the scenic trip around Lough Mask. They traveled through Tourmakeady, Finney, Clonbur and Ballinrobe before sprinting it out outside the Partry community centre. A slightly shorter version for leisure riders saw them avoid the three laps, but still required them to tackle the hills around the lake.
