Lacey CupTralee, Ireland, February 27, 2005Wyley Wins In TraleeLast year's Des Hanlon memorial winner Rory Wyley showed he is in stomping form again this season with a fine win in the Lacey Cup in Tralee today. The Dan Morrissey-Carrick Wheelers rider proved quickest in the deciding two-up gallop against Michael Hennessy (Fermoy CC). Wyley's team-mate Brian Truman beat Denis Lynch (Kanturk Credit Union), John Horgan (St. Finbarr's) and Eddie O'Donoghue (Murphy and Gunn CC) in the bunch sprint for third. A decent field of 98 riders signed on for the 48 mile handicap event. First off were the veterans and senior 3 riders, followed by the juniors and second cats and then, finally, by the senior 1 group. Dan Morrissey rider Brian Truman threw down the gauntlet five miles into the race, going clear alone before being joined by team-mate Maurice Hartery and Gordon Tagney (Killarney). Truman set the pace on the climb of Gleann Na Gealt while, behind, the scratch group caught the junior/second cat bunch. The three leaders did what they could to stay clear but after turning into a strong headwind along the coast road, they were reabsorbed by the senior 3/veteran group. These were in turn overhauled by the scratch riders just before Castlemaine and the Slieve Mish climb. Wyley, Hennessy and Kealan O Connor (Fermoy) made their move on the final climb of the day, although the latter faded and went back to the bunch. That left two up front to fight it out for the honours, Wyley proving decisively stronger inside the final 400 metres. In the other categories, Barry Meehan (Worldwide Cycles, senior 3), James McCarthy (Fermoy CC, junior), Maurice Hartley (Dan Morrissey, veteran), Siobhan Dervan (St. Finbarr's, first woman) and Kevin Hayes (Ballymore CC, senior 3) were successful.
