Phoenix Grand PrixNutt’s Corner, Northern Ireland, March 21, 2004Cranston wins up northBy Shane Stokes, irishcycling.com Gary Cranston (East Antrim-Audi) got the better of two Banbridge riders to win the Phoenix Grand Prix at Nutt’s corner yesterday. Cranston went clear with Roger Aiken and Don Travers on the final lap of the 50 mile race, then jumped away to reach the line five seconds clear of Aiken. The handicap race attracted a large field of over 100 riders who braved the cold, wet conditions. The field was split in four groups, spread over eight minutes, with the juniors and over 50 riders off first, followed by the younger veterans. The field eventually came all together, sparking off a series of attacks which culminated in the race winning move by Cranston, Aiken and Travers. And while the odds looked good for one of the Banbridge riders to profit from their numerical strength, Cranston was strong enough to take the win himself.
