Munster Road Race ChampionshipsKillorglin, June 20, 2004Two for GriffinBy Shane Stokes Paul Griffin took a rare weekend double when he won both the Munster road race championship and the John Drum Memorial in Currow. The Earl of Desmond rider was returning to competition after the FBD Milk Rás and was in fine form, showing that the break had worked well to prepare him for the second half of the season. Griffin, Sean Lacey, Timmy Barry (Cidona), Michael Fitzgerald (Ballymore), John Blackwell (Murphy and Gunn), Vinnie Gleeson (West Clare) and Kanturk's Daniel Lynch went clear early on, opening up a big lead over the main field. Griffin and Gleeson went clear on the final lap, the Earl of Desmond rider proving faster in the final burst for the line. Fizgerald took third and was best senior 2 rider, while junior rider Marcus Treacy (Killarney) outsprinted breakaway companion Leslie O Donnell (Cidona Carrick Wheelers) in the junior/senior 3/veterans race.
