Ulster Road Race ChampionshipHamiltonsbawn, June 19, 2004Murphy wins Ulster ChampionshipBy Shane Stokes Victorious last week in the Sean Nolan Meath GP, Conor Murphy (Crannog Ireland) reached the top step of the podium once again on Saturday when he won the Ulster Senior Road Race Championship at Hamiltonsbawn. At the end of the 50 mile event Murphy outsprinted Gary Crory (Total Cycling - Litespeed), with Roger Aiken (Banbridge) outsprinting Tommy Evans for the bronze medal twenty seconds later. The four riders were part of a group of fifteen which opened up a decisive gap at the halfway point of the race. This group worked together for a while before the inevitable attacks started getting closer to the finish. Brendan Doherty (Totalcycling.com) went clear but was reeled in by Murphy. At the start of the final lap Crory forged ahead and was soon joined by the Crannog Ireland rider, the two staying clear to the line. Murphy proved quicker than Crory in the final few hundred meters, with Aiken, Evans, Willie Hamilton (East Antrim Audi) and Paul Mulligan (Crannog Ireland) next home. Mary Boyd (Roe Valley) outsprinted local favourite Freida Brown (Orchard Wheelers) to win the women's title, while Brown's team-mate Simon Williams won the under 16 title. XMTB riders Jonathan Beers and William Boyd won the under 14 and under 12 titles, while David Watson (Northern Dave Kane) was first junior in the main race.
