Boot Inn League #4June 2, 2004Gordon wins Boot Inn League round 4By Shane Stokes Dublin Wheelers rider Deborah Gordon came out best at the end of the fourth round of the Cycling Ireland Boot Inn women's league on Wednesday, leading home Kathy Varley (Stamullen M. Donnelly) and Margie Philips (Garda). Bernie McNally (McNally Swords) and Aoife O'Connor (3Dtri) placed fourth and fifth while Orla Hendron (Orwell - Dundrum SC) outsprinted Siobhan Jacob (Usher IRC) to take sixth. The result sees Hendron join Jacob at the top of the league table, both on 36 points. Gillian McDarby (The Bagel Bar) is third on 35 points, while Gordon's win moves her up to fourth. Thirteen riders turned out for the race. Under the handicap system the six scratch riders - Hendron, Jacob, McDarby, Joanie Burns (Orwell - Dundrum SC), Roisin Kennedy (Usher IRC) and Susan O'Mara (Dublin Wheelers) - had to cover four laps of the five mile circuit. The limit group of Gordon, Susan Lavery (Garda), Varley and Shiela Duggan (unattached) had three laps to cover, as did the middle group of Philips, O'Connor and McNally. Gordon and Varley went clear of Duggan and Lavery, who were mopped up by chasers before the finish. Philips, McNally and O'Connor stayed clear of the scratch group, who had worked very well together (under the direction of O'Mara) for the first lap and a half. However the scratch group broke up, with O'Mara and McDarby losing contact and Burns pulling out of the race. This fragmentation cost them some momentum in their chase, as did the attacks inside the final half lap. Here, the two Usher riders Kennedy and Jacob sought to work over Hendron, but the tactic crumbled when Kennedy lost contact on the final run in to the line. Hendron was quick enough to get the edge over league leader Jacob in the sprint, moving up to the same points total in the overall standings.
