Kerry Youth Tour

July 31-August 2, 2004

By Míceal Concannon

The Category 1 race turned into a fascinating contest even though the racing was very stop-start. 37 riders finished in the winning bunch on Stage 1 giving the yellow jersey to Cedric Schnakers, Belgium with Michael Robinson, South Africa in 2nd place. Kieran Enright, Kanturk Credit Union was 3rd with Jonathan Bellis, Isle of Man 4th, Jeremiah O'Sullivan a Killorglin rider on the Irish team 5th and his team mate Fergus Keogh 6th. Mark McNally, Team Corrado was 7th and Xavier Hartman, Belgium was 8th. These were the principal characters in the drama that was about to be played out over the rest of the race. Schnakers inability to time trial saw him slip to 11th place on stage 2 and a fine effort by Robinson, O'Sullivan and Hartman saw them take the stage prizes in that order and also to lead the General Classification in that same order but separated only by 4s with Bellis, McNally and Enright all within another 4s. On stage 3 Robinson crashed heavily and withdrew from the race. None of the leaders was willing to commit to making a big effort and so the race moved to yet another sprint finish. It was here that the value of finishing bonuses came into sharp relief. Bellis took the stage and with it a 3 bonus from Enright who picked up 2s and McNally who got a 1 bonus. This was enough to put Bellis into yellow with O'Sullivan in 2nd place and Hartman in 3rd both at 1 with McNally and Enright at 2s.

Things don't get much tighter at the top of a GC sheet and so began the 4th stage which always looked as if it would come down to a sprint for the vital win bonuses. Jeremiah O'Sullivan gave everything he had to get away before the final lap but no one was going to let that happen. The finishing sprint up the hill in Killorglin was as good as any finish in the Ras. Mark McNally won from Bellis with Hartman picking up the vital 1 bonus. Enright and O'Sullivan and Peter Kennaugh completed the top 6. The outcome was that Bellis held on by one from McNally and Hartmann third. Jeremiah O'Sullivan of the promoting Killorglin Credit Union Cycling Club was 4th with Enright 5th and Rhys Lloyd completing the line up for the prizes.

Thomas Diggle, Team Corrado easily won the mountains category with 86 points more than twice that of McNally who was 2nd . It came as no surprise that Bellis won the points category and that Team Corrado won the team prize. Mark McNally was the winner of the young rider category.

The Category 2 race was absolutely under the control of William Penn, Lichfield City CC. On his way to taking the yellow jersey he won three of the four stages. His closest rivals were Alex Aldham-Breary, PCA/Circlos Uno/Abbey Business and Luke Rowe, Welsh Cycling Union who were 2nd and 3td respectively. The value of the winning bonus on the road stages proved to be the critical factor separating the riders as there was a sprint for the line in each of the road stages. Not surprisingly Penn also won the Points Class. Scott Thwaithes, Welsh Cycling Union won the KOH Category. Sam Looker, Isle of Man was the leading rider and Alice Pirard, VC Ardennes was the leading female rider. The Irish riders were much closer to the mark than in the Category 3 race. However, the sprinting ability of the three leaders and their capacity for time trialing proved to be the critical factor for the victors. Eoin Leahy, Kanturk Credit Union and Adrian O'Connor, Killorlgin Credit Union were the best of the Irish riders in 6th and 7th position.

The Category 3 race was dominated from beginning to end by James Berry, Isle of Man, Mark Baxter, PPV Palmer Park Velo and Alexandria Greenfield of Welsh Cycling Union with Sarah Reynolds, Breton Wheelers who took two of the stages taking 4th place. Stuart Clayton and Genevieve Billington of BC West Midlands took 5th and 6th place. Even though Mark Baxter failed by the slenderest of margins to take the yellow jersey he won both the mountain classification and the points competition. The strength in depth of youth cycling in Wales was clearly demonstrated by the margin the Welsh Cycling Union team took in winning the team classification. The best young rider was Sarah Reynolds, Breton Wheelers. Alexandria Greenfield, WCU was the leading female rider.
