Boot Inn League #6July 7, 2004In-form Kennedy wins round sixBy Shane Stokes Usher IRC riders Roisin Kennedy and Siobhan Jacob have stamped their authority on the Boot Inn Women's league, with Kennedy winning ahead of her team-mate in Wednesday's sixth round and Jacob reversing the positions in terms of the overall standings. Wednesday's five lap bonus event had an extra five points on offer but despite this Orla Hendron (Orwell - Dundrum SC), Debbie Gordon (All Systems Dublin Wheelers) and Gillian McDarby (The Bagel Bar), who were lying second, third and fourth overall in the league standings, missed the race. Ten riders lined out for the 40 kilometre contest and were split into two groups. The first group consisted of Susan Lavery (Garda), Kathy Varley (Stamullen), Bernie McNally (Swords), Deborah Byrne (Bray Wheelers) and newcomer Caroline Donaghy (Tsunami). These were chased by Kennedy, Jacob, Joanie Burns (Orwell Dundrum SC), Grace McNally and Emma Quirke (Swords). This second group stayed together for the first three laps, after which Kennedy pressed on alone. She overhauled those in front with just over one lap to go and was briefly joined by McNally. Jacob finally managed to shake off the clutches of the bunch and caught McNally, who lost contact soon afterwards. The two Usher IRC riders came together beside the runway and stayed together until the finish, where Jacob experience some gear problems. Kennedy won the sprint to move second in the league, Jacob at the helm overall. The remaining riders from the scratch group - Grace McNally, Quirke and Burns - took the next three places, with McNally finishing sixth. This round has seen significant changes to the overall league table. The combination of the five bonus points awarded to all riders at this round of the league sees Kennedy move up to second place ahead of the absent Hendron, Gordon and McDarby. Jacob retains her first place overall with a lead of 13 points, while Orwell Dundrum SC riders Orla Hendron and Joanie Burns are third and fourth. The next round of the Boot Inn League takes place on 21st July. Please note that this race is being relocated to coincide with the Stagg Cycles LCF Festival race. This is to facilitate riders who wish to race in both events, and to introduce the new women to racing with men. The exact location and time of the race will be advertised shortly.
