Lacey CupTralee, February 29, 2004Griffin takes first win of the season in KerryBy Shane Stokes Showing the benefits from ten days of racing in the Tour de Langkawi last month, Paul Griffin (Earl of Desmond) rode to a strong victory in the season opening Lacey Cup race in Tralee on Sunday. Griffin was one of the first category riders who were last off in the 48 mile handicap event, conceding six minutes to the veterans, ladies and senior three categories and three to the junior and senior 2 riders. The course included two tough climbs, Gleannan Gealt and Slieve Mish, and Earl of Desmond riders Niall Brosnan and Seán Lacey took primes at the first of these. Brosnan was first across the line, also landing the new Jackie O'Connor trophy for first Tralee rider to the top, while Lacey took another sprint to the same line to win the Big Little Bike Shop-sponsored prime. Griffin then instigated a seven-rider breakaway which by Castlemaine had opened up a significant lead. His aggression continued on the slopes of Slieve Mish, Griffin and Lacey attacking the other riders before the former dragged Timmy Barry (Cidona) and Richie Cahill (Banteer) clear. The finishing sprint posed little trouble for Griffin, his acceleration bringing him across the line ahead of Barry and Cahill. Lacey, John O'Shea and Rory Wyley (both Cidona Carrick Wheelers) finished 25 seconds back, while Cidona's Maurice Hartery and Killarney's John Crowley took the senior 2 and senior 3 prizes. Shane O'Halloran (Duhallow Wheelers) was best junior, Lesley O'Donnell (Cidona Carrick Wheelers) was first of the veterans while Sioban Dervan (St. Finbarr's) took the women's prize. The KOH award went to Brosnan.
