Dunboyne Three DayMay 31 - June 2, 2003The stages
By Tommy Campbell After three stages of the Dunboyne Three-Day cycle race, Fraser Duncan of the Hibernian Ireland team holds a slender two second lead over Paul Brady of Emyvale with the veteran Lennie Kirk a further five seconds in arrears. Duncan from Belfast has the support of the Irish team, but in the recent past nobody has led from pillar to post. If there is a slip up, you can count on Kirk who has competed a the top level to use his knowledge and ability to carve out a win. Today’s stage over 70 miles leaves the village of Dunboyne at one o'clock. Yesterday's test against the clock was won by Theo Hardwick from the Killorglin Credit Union CC who proved yet again that he is a supreme tester. In the afternoon, Emmet Hogan from Galway made a welcome return to the winners enclosure. In the late 90's Emmet was a rising star, but took time out from competitive cycling to pursue other matters. By Shane Stokes Hibernian Team Ireland’s Frazer Duncan successfully defended his lead through stages two and three of the Dunboyne Three Day today, riding strongly in the morning’s 3.5 mile time trial and then finishing with his main rivals in the afternoon road race. Duncan came in fifth in the 3.5 mile race against the clock, finishing a matter of seconds behind Theo Hardwick (Killorglin Credit Union), Leinster’s David Dukes and Sean Bracken, plus Keith Bannon of the Tilechoice team. His Hibernian Team Ireland junior team-mates then helped control affairs in the following 59 mile road race. The stage honours went to Galway Bay’s Emmet Hogan, who proved fastest of those in a small breakaway group at the finish. Second was Peter Hawkins (Castlereagh Wheelers), with Fergal Whelan (Stagg Cycles) third and Sean Bracken (Leinster), David Lane (UCD) and Fran Ennis (Staggs Lucan) next home. The bunch finished close behind, causing little change in the overall standings. The race concludes tomorrow with a 74 mile road race in the Dunboyne area.
