Noel Hammond Memorial Cycling ClassicBallyboughal, Co. Dublin, May 11, 2003By Tommy Campbell Denis Easton who dropped out of the Three-Day Tour of Ulster last Monday when, as race leader going into for the final stage, he opted to attend a wedding of a colleague, was in the winning groove again yesterday when he won the Noel Hammond Memorial Cycling Classic in Ballyboughal, Co. Dublin. He had some anxious moments as he waited for the result of the 84-mile event held in North Co. Dublin over seven laps. Fortunately the promoting club, Orwell Wheelers had the benefit of checking the photo finish film, which gave the nod to Easton over Joe Fenlon. "The judges on the line were split as to who was the winner. It would have been a hard call, but the film decided the outcome," said race organiser Aidan Hammond. A hundred plus went to the start line, but it was on the third lap that the event came alive when Easton, Fenlon, Shane Baker, Paddy Moriarty, Scott McDonald and Brian Kenneally started the break that ultimately decided the outcome. With two laps remaining, the race favourite, Kenneally from Piltown and McDonald of the promoting club lost their place at the head of the event. In the end it came to the original quartet to battle it for the honours, with Easton coming off best not alone for his sprint but the camera which shaded it in his favour.
