Stewart wins Portaferry Three Day

Brian Stewart of the Northern Dave Kane Cycles club won the Portaferry 3 day today, finishing in the main bunch just 4 seconds behind the stage winner Philip Marshall (Toyota North Down). Stewart had finished third behind East Antrim CC's Willie Hamilton on Friday's 30 mile opening stage at the Kirkistown motor circuit, and seized the lead on stage two when he won the 50 mile second stage.

Stewart then finished fourth in Saturday afternoon's one mile time-trial up Windmill Hill in Portaferry, some four seconds slower than winner Matthew Ward of Phoenix CC. Carrying an overall lead of 39 seconds into today's final 51 mile stage at Portaferry, he and most of the favourites went clear in a 14 man group but after an attack by Ward and Brendan Doherty (TotalCycling.com/Lindsay Ford), the rest of the break was reeled back in by the main bunch. Ward and Doherty were themselves recaptured with three miles to go, paving the way for Marshall and Stewart's respective triumphs.
