Stalder wins again

Despite overcast skies, there was no sign of the rain that had made cornering the week before a little dicey, and good fields rolled out in all grades. For the first time, the D Grade bunch was the biggest on the 3.2km circuit, shading the 55 strong A Grade bunch by 3 riders.

The A Grade was characterised by a series of unusually large breaks in the first 30 minutes. The biggest contained all the main players, including runaway series leader Andrew Stalder and his Promains/Richmond Cyclery team mate Anthony Smith, Australian Under 23 road champion Simon Clarke (South Australia.com/AIS), Tom Leaper (Pro-Motion Bicycles), Danny Kah and Vaughan Bowman (CCCC/SHM Elite), Pete Johnstone (Jayco VIS), Murray Spink (Giant) and Charles Howett, as well as the newest and youngest A Grade addition, Pat Lane (TCR).

Without good cooperation from the big lead group, the bunch reformed before a series of attacks saw a new lead group emerge, containing Smith, Leaper, Bowman and CCCC/SHM Elite’s Matt Chessum and team manager Frank Cipriano, Jono Lovelock (Jayco VIS), Paul Kelly (Mascot Cycles), David Kemp (Pro-Maotion) and Dale Woonton.

With the margin around 15 seconds, Clarke and Stalder and Pat Shaw (Jayco VIS) were the final riders to make the break, but the jump in pace when they arrived saw the break split again, with only Kemp, Bowman, Chessum and Smith able to stay with the new arrivals.

Bowman dropped off the pace with three laps remaining, and the bunch closed in a little, before some big turns by Stalder and Clarke saw the margin blow out to over 30 seconds at the bell. In the dash to the line, Stalder took his 7th win of the series, to end a run of three consecutive second places. Clarke was next home, pleased with his hit out before flying out to the Tour of Langkawi, ahead of Shaw, Kemp, Chessum and Smith.

B Grade riders found it much harder to escape their attentive bunch. Just past half way Darren Sayers (Top Gear Cycles) and Chris Broeren pulled clear, but were quickly chased down, and Ken Ford also made repeated efforts to split things up.

Russell Newnham (Pro-Motion) and Stefan Kirsch (Great Doherty’s) left their break until the final fifteen minutes, but faired no better, with the sprinters hell bent on showing their speed.

Clint Van Beveren (Power Bar) and Noel Tanner fought out a very close finish, with big Clint taking the win by little more than a tyre’s width. Chris Halley (Kennedy Cycle Fit) flew down the left hand barriers to take a clear third, ahead of Stuart Wallace and Calvin Watson (TCR), with the women’s win going to Lisa Friend (Drapac Porsche).

C Grade found themselves being drag raced by the massive D Grade bunch for much of the second half of the race, before forging ahead in the final ten minutes, only to have the D Graders come past again at the start of their final lap. Once D Grade were safely out of the way, the final two laps for the C Grade bunch were uneventful and a bunch kick resulted.

Daniel Andjelic took the sprint ahead of exciting juniors Luke Parker (The Freedom Machine) and Matt Fortunato (Degani Coffee/CBD Cycles), with the vastly more experienced John Pritchard fourth. Lisa Rosan rode strongly to run out a clear winner of the women’s section.

D Grade’s huge numbers, and a number of surprisingly strong new-comers, made for one of the quickest D Grade races on record, with the exuberant first timers matching the pace of both the B and C Grade bunches for extensive periods of time.

Unsurprisingly, at that pace, breakaways were short lived and a bunch sprint determined the places with young Tom Livesay taking a good win ahead of mountain biker Andrew Oosterweghel, Paul Montgomery and Eric Shepherd.

In the women’s race within a race, Laurel Dayman (Mascot Cycles) collected her first win, handling the increased tempo well, with Andrea Bishop next home.
