Not only did the riders have to tackle the tough climb from Sutton Grange over to Hartcourt North, they also faced a three kilometre section of dirt road and a stiff head wind back to Emu Creek. Peter Moroni woke this morning primed to race mountain bikes but Lance Tonkin convinced him to opt for the bitumen racing instead. It proved to be a good decision too, with Moroni smashing his fellow limit markers on the dirt section and going solo on the tough 2.5 kilometre climb, where the gradient reaches over 10 percent. Moroni then went on to extend his lead to two minutes at Axe Creek Road. Behind, bunches struggled to ride together on the dirt road and steep climb. Luke Knox hit the 12 minute third scratch bunch on the dirt section and proceeded to ride his way towards the front of the race dragging only a few front markers with him. The two bunches at the rear of field rode well on the road to Sutton Grange, but both splintered on the dirt road and climb of the Harcourt - Sutton Grange Road. Dave Pell and Tom Southam rode fellow scratchmen off their wheels before catching the remaining five minute riders on the Turd-Burger Hill between Harcourt North and Sedgewick. But the scratchmen were never in the hunt. The race was on for Moroni to hold his gap from the chasing Knox and 20 minutes riders. On the line Moroni won easily in deteriorating conditions in race with a high attrition rate.
