It looked like another doubtful day with black clouds massing overhead and a strong westerly sweeping across the circuit. The threat of rain restricted the start list but the quality was there ready for whatever was coming their way. The race run over six laps of a nine kilometre circuit as a handicap saw Ruth Haslam and Alan Taylor leading off with a 24 minute advantage over the scratchmen. Next underway on 18 min were Stan Baker, Rob Davis, Jack Iverson, Tony van Merwyk and Joe Cox followed by Wade Longworth, Andrew Bennett and Fraser Hanlan at 12 minutes. Further back Laurie Longworth and Steve Ware were on six minutes while Brian Buck and Geoff Marshall, just back from the World Masters in Austria, on 2.30 minutes. Finally the scratchmen, Mark Roberts and Phil Diesel with a lot of ground to make up. Early timings showed that of the various groups the main contenders would be the 18 minute bunch with many years of experience and scratchmen Roberts and Diesel. Doing it tough at about the halfway mark Buck, Iveson, Hanlan and Bennett decided to retire from the event as Laurie Longworth and Marshall were feeling the pinch after forcing the pace early on. Also pressing on in the blustery conditions and determined to finish were Taylor and Haslam. In an incredibly tight finish the scratchmen failed by less than 10 metres to reel in the leading group. Emerging from the tight bunch an evergreen Stan Baker secured a terrific win from Rob Davis with Joe Cox third and club president Tony van Merwyk fourth. Following the hectic finish the remainder of the field was completely split and was lead in by Ware then Wade Longworth, who was on his own for much of the race and performed very strongly. Mark Roberts, fifth overall, posted the fastest time of 1.21.20.
