Deisel was one of two scratch men along with Russell Fryer. Ware and Fryer worked well together to clip almost minute each lap of the gap to the strong trio of Marshall, Ware and Paul Slocombe (just back on the bike after a serious bout of flu). The nine minute group of Andy Bennett, Phil Edwards and Wade Longworth started well but the pressure was such that the bunch splintered and lost momentum. The strong 12 minute group of veterans Stan Baker, Tony Ridgley and Guy Pathe struck trouble with a pothole resulting in two withdrawals, Pathe with a buckled wheel and Baker with a puncture. Longmarkers Alan Taylor and Ken Portman held off the chasers for more than three laps and continued on to take seventh and eighth places.
