Southern Highlands riders came down to join with the Illawarra riders in raising funds to assist with Richard Vollebregt's assault on the Race Across America (RAAM). Vollebregt last year set a new record for the ride from Perth to Sydney, this saw him receive an invitation from the RAAM organisers to participate in this year's event. Seventy one riders lined up before the starter for the handicap race. The eight riders off the scratch mark made their intention very clear by setting off at a near record pace as soon as the starter dropped the flag. The riders were divided up into eight bunches by the handicappers. At the end of the first lap the 12min bunch had caught the two bunches in front of them and had only lost 30sec to the chasing bunch. Scratch had caught the two bunches in front of them with 1min to the 7min bunch and 3min to the 9min group. When the streamlined scratch group finally caught the 9min bunch at Hooker Estate on the way to the finish the 12min group was dangling just over a minute in front. It appeared that the scratch group would swallow everyone in front before the finish but the tenacious 12min group powered on to reach the finish line 41sec in front of them. Nine riders were up for the sprint finish with the honours going to Tim Egan from Sth Highlands from Illawarra's Rob Cummins and Peter Evans. In a very close contested sprint finish of the scratch group Craig Paull was victorious over Patrick O'Shea from Sth Highlands. Fastest time went to Paull, Justin Tomlinson Sth Highlands and Aaron Terechovs. Their time of 1:05:07:84 is one of the fastest ever for the course. Next week it is a 1pm start for the 66km scratch race.
