This was the thirteenth running of the "Classic", the Club's major handicap event. The 45km event was raced on the Mangalore Service Road course. A strong scratch group of Alan Adams, Ron Burgess, Silas Fisher, Carl Simmons and Shayne Kirby conceded a 20min start to the limit group of Dane O'Keefe, Ethan McMennemin, Murray Thompson, Bryan White and Pat O'Connor. This group did a great job to lead the race for 37km in the windy conditions, before being caught by the middle handicap group of John Burgess, Gee, Jenkins, Rigby and Ekberg. However this group's winning chance was short lived as the Scratch group, with the 4min riders in tow, stormed to the lead, with 5km to race. Shayne Kirby and Carl Simmons made a break in the final kilometre to set up a winning opportunity. Simmons, after a huge turn of speed, tired, leaving the race to Kirby, who crossed the line with metres to spare from the chasing placegetters. Silas Fisher was second with Alan Adams, third. Carl Simmons hung on for fourth place from a fast finishing Bret Loney, fifth. Shayne Kirby, also recorded fastest time of 1:04:41 for the 45km. Racing next Saturday (31/3) is from Tallarook at 2pm.
