Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Carnegie Caulfield Cycling ClubGlenvale Crescent Criteriums - Sunday, March 4, 2007By Mal Sawford Light drizzle fell throughout most of the morning, but never got heavy enough to make the wide roads of Glenvale Crescent particularly slippery. Wet roads always keep numbers down a little, so to see over 160 riders prepared to get their bikes dirty was a bit of a bonus! Warren Nelson (Terry Hammond Cycles) launched the semi-traditional start line attack in A Grade, setting the tone for an hour of non-stop attacks. As usual, the SHM Cycles team was more than willing to send riders up the road, and were represented by Peter Barnett in the first move to gain significant distance on the chasing bunch. Barnett combined with Paul Mason and Dale Woonton (Hillman) for five minutes before the Promains led peloton chased up. Sandy Machin (SHM) countered, joined by Andrew Stalder (Promains) and Nathan Wise (Richmond Cyclery), and this trio spent three laps off the front before the bunch reformed again. Danny Kah was the next of the SHM boys to break the shackles, and pulled ten seconds clear with ten minutes to race. Machin tried to bridge without success before Barnett reached his team mate in the company of Wise and Aiden McInernay (Fitzroy Cycles). Approaching three to go, the field reformed, before firstly Peter Trigar, then Matt Shea (Inexa Race Frames) jumped away in solo moves, but the bunch was together again when the 3 to go' lap board was shown. Mason had one last try with just under two laps remaining, before the Promains lead out train took control. Dylan Boone (The Rouleur) led out of the final corner, but Andrew Stalder (Promains) had no trouble coming off his wheel to notch up his fifth win of the season. Richard England (Priority Health/VIS) sprinted into third, with Kah, Brendan Rowbotham (SHM) and Daniel Braunsteins (Richmond Cyclery) hitting the line inches apart for the minor places. The B Grade bunch didn't take long to decide the damp roads weren't an impediment to going fast in the early session, with early attacks coming from Darren Sayers (Top Gear Cycles) and Cam Rotter (Datacom/Burnley Finance), and later the two smallest riders in the bunch in Pat Lane (TCR) and Russell Newnham (Pro-Motion). For most of the middle part of the race, however, the field stayed compact, until Paul Weymouth (Jones Cycles) opened a big solo lead. Oce he was caught, the final ten minutes saw the attacks come thick and fast. Time trial specialists Chris Hunt (Kennedy Cycle Fit) and Dennis Bowen-Day (Biggin & Scott) both launched big efforts before Paul Groves (Croydon Cycleworks) combined with Ciaran Jones and Newnham off the front of the bunch. Groves kept the pressure on as the bunch reformed, and pulled away again with Geoff Parker (Pro-Motion). Jones bridged on the following lap, and this trio were still ten seconds up at three to go; a lead which evaporated before the end of the 1200 metre lap. Peter Walker (Peninsula Star) attacked strongly at the bell, and jumped across to Richard Cormick (Datacom/Burnley), Bowen-Day and Hunt, who had opened a narrow lead in the back straight. Walker showed no signs of slowing, but hadn't counted on the impressive turn of pace from Sydney visitor David Whyman, who shot across to the leaders, and carried on past to take the win comfortably. Walker was a clear second ahead of Cormick and John Hollingworth, with Sayers leading the rest of the bunch home in fifth place, just ahead of British rider Catherine Hare (Biggin & Scott). Craig Porter powered away from C Grade from the outset and kept the bunch at bay for the first ten minutes. Radelle Berriman (Terry Hammond) showed that she wasn't just racing for the women's prize with her own solo attack soon after, but she too was brought back. Ike Collings launched four attacks in quick succession without shaking off the chasers before Neale Adams and David McGrath has more luck. McGrath kept the hammer down after Adams returned to the bunch, and continued to work with Michael Milewski once he had crossed the gap. This pair hovered around ten seconds ahead of the bunch, but was cruelly caught on the final lap, allowing Jason Spencer to sprint to the win ahead of Collings, Porter and Adams. Berriman's attacking ride didn't stop her taking the women's sprint ahead of Melissa Kah. After the neutral period in D Grade finished, the rapid tempo set by Peter Quibell, Ben Wragg and Daniel Petrovic saw the bunch split into two groups. When the pace eased a little, junior star Peter Vlahos attacked alone and spent just shy of three laps leading the race. Once Vlahos' attack was neutralized, Quibell took over pace making duties again, and a bunch of twenty survived to contest the sprint finish. Scott Berry (Terry Hammond) made his first race after a lengthy absence a winning one, finishing ahead of another youngster in Haydn Paynter, with Conan Daley and Stuart Anstee filling the final places and Andrea Bishop taking the women's prize. Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue every Tuesday evening at Sandown Raceway. Entry is via the Sandown Road entrance (Melways map 80 B6), from 6pm, with all grades racing at 6.30. Sundays are at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80 B2). B, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and C Grade ride at 10am. All holders of 2007 Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20. Licenses are now available at all CCCC events. All returning riders must resume in the grade they last raced in, unless prior arrangement has been made.
