Southern Canberra - Sunday, June 3, 2007

Forty one cyclists braved the rally-car-ridden roads of Southern Canberra on Sunday to race 40 km in the shadow of Mt Tennant. The original course included a stretch along Point Hut Road. However, riders arriving at the start in Tharwa were concerned by the amount of traffic travelling to the Subaru Rally of Canberra along that road. We eventually changed the course to be a two-lap circuit, between Tharwa and Apollo Road, roughly 40km in total and finishing a few hundred metres south of Tharwa in front of Cuppacumbalong.

C Grade had the biggest turnout, with 18 starters, followed by B Grade with 12. There were five starters in the Women's category, four in A Grade and two each in D Grade and juniors.

Jude May handily won the Women's race ahead of Meg Ross and Chloe Hosking. Paul Farrant and Megan Pitcher took first and second in the juniors, and Peter Lansom and Michael Phelan won the C and B Grade races, respectively. Stu Shaw rode solo off the front for much of the A Grade race, although he didn't appear to be breathing too hard when he crossed the finish line in a blaze of red.

Several riders thought the new course was far more interesting and selective than the previous route down Point Hut Rd.

Many thanks to the marshals who spent a beautiful Sunday morning helping out with the race in lieu of riding themselves and thanks also to the family members and friends who turned up to cheer the riders on.
