Ally Nish Handicap, Canberra- Saturday, July 28, 2007

36 riders presented themselves to the starting line for the annual Ally Nish Handicap over 38 kilometres. Ally Nish was a prominent local businessman who opened Canberra's first sports store.

Five grades were sent off. At 13 minutes was our sole junior representative Alistair Smith (who was doing one lap) in only his third or fourth race ever! The other grades were: D Grade at 11 minutes, C Grade at 7 minutes, B grade at 3 minutes and A grade off scratch. Racing from the start was hot with D Grade splitting itself up after the first turn. Felix Pirie, Andrew Schloeffel and Gareth Davies formed a tight breakaway, but with the other grades remaining largely intact it was going to be hard for this 'gang of three' to win. This became evident when after the first lap Pirie was 10 metres off the back and a large C grade bunch was only 90 seconds behind. A Grade, the last bunch, was also closing in some 4.50 down. As the riders passed the start/finish line for the last time, and with 4.5 kms to race, a total of 2 minutes separated all of the bunches. Driving the bunches were Simon Claringbold and Jason Hewardine in B Grade and Simon Christopher and Graeme Albon in A Grade. In the finale it came down to a sprint as Andrew Schloeffel held off the fast finishing higher grades. All of the grades were represented in the top 11 riders and there was 52 seconds separating first to 11 th place. Clearly the handicappers earned their pay this weekend.

First woman was Lyndsay Vivian and fastest time was Simon Christopher. Special mention must go to Alistair Smith who rode his 19 km race in 39.04. Everyone gave Alistair a round of applause for his efforts. And also Canberra Cycling Club extends its welcome to visitors Graeme Albon (Goulburn CC) and Bruce Goodspeed (Eurobodalla CC). We hope you'll come and race again with us.
