With a slight Northerly wind, conditions were perfect for the final leg of the 50km event with riders willing to push themselves harder in order to be this year's winner of the Tom Perry Memorial Trophy race. Glen O'Brien returned to the racing scene after a break from the competitive program joining his fellow riders Peter Weston and Peter Evans in the 22.5-minute bunch. Off-limit rider; Gordon Lawton had a 19.5 minute buffer over the duo of Angelo Ylia and John Eshman. Two riders faced the challenge of Murtho road solo this week, Gordon Lawton and Chris Stevens. Stevens was forced to try and reel in Evans, Weston and O'Brien whilst distancing himself from the chopping block pair of Angus Boase and Mick Gray. Chopping block had a 4.5-minute advantage over Lee Stevens and Matthew Benson who rode off scratch 33.5 minutes behind Lawton. Spectators witnessed the first rider to push round the final bend, the style, the urgency, it was of course none other than club Veteran and the 2001 winner; Gordon Lawton. The honour of the win and his sheer determination kept him ahead of the chasing field, with Mick Gray and Angus Boase claiming 2nd and 3rd respectively; 1'30sec behind. Evans claimed fourth followed by Weston ahead of a tight battle for fastest time. Benson and Stevens sprinted down the final straight, sixth place and fastest time being decided by a 'panel of judges'. With no bias entered in to, Stevens was declared the winner by literally splitting hairs and the spectators were left to cheer the remaining riders home. Ylia claimed 9th place ahead of Eshman who had both been passed earlier by Chris Stevens. Glen O'Brien rolled home in eleventh place, hopefully with his legs warmed up for this Sunday's race at Monash followed by the handicap event held at Loveday on the 5th August.
