Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Tuggeranong Vikings Cycling ClubSaturday July 21, 200766 riders across all grades turned out on a beautiful still clear winter's morning to tackle the Stromlo crit circuit in teams of three. The perfect weather saw some great team work and fast sprints for the primes. We had several newcomers to Canberra racing so a big welcome to them and we hope to see you at more races. Thanks very much to everyone who helped out - the whole morning went very smoothly and the running of the criterium as a teams event was hugely successful, with many introductions that wouldn't have otherwise had happened and the opportunity to put into action some team tactics. A Grade men A cautious A grade men's field started off the day with three teams sprinting for the points. The grade stayed together, without too much aggression shown except for during the three primes which were dominated by an in form Michael Matthews, riding for the Brumby's/Ride Shop team, who scored the maximum possible individual tally of 25 points. Graeme Allbon (Team A) and Michael Phelan (Team A minus) were the other consistent scorers, sharing the second and third places between them, but when a guy wins every sprint…what can you do? B Grade Men The B grade points were was dominated by the contrasting figures of Stephen Bomball (15 points) and Wes Garrett (10), who scored in each of the first sprints before launching a devastating attack on the field. Wes managed to hold on to second position from the looming peloton and secure second place for his team, Fuentes' Blood Bags. But it was Stephen who had the lungs and rode away for an impressive solo victory for team Slow Twitch. C Grade Men/A Grade Women The A grade women riders chose to join the men's C field to get a better race in. Two teams scored consistently in the sprints in this race with J for Jorge and V-Mobile using their team tactics to perfection in the intermediate primes. After the second prime, the race was blown to pieces by a break from Mitchell Lovelock-Faye (V-Mobile) and Daniel Green (Dave Osmond Fan Club). Daniel's team hadn't scored so well so far so a first place across the finish for double points was what they needed and what they got. But with Mitchell coming through in a strong second place, V-Mobile just secured a tie for first with J for Jorge (12 points), leaving the Dave Osmond Fan Club just one point shy on 11. B Grade Women/D Grade Men D Grade Men were joined by the B Grade women (with the girls outnumbering the guys!) to bring the field up to twenty riders. Belinda McCredie, in her first ever criterium, also fearlessly joined the grade, as the numbers were insufficient to run a separate Women's C grade. The pace was on early with a flying sprint for the 'secret' prime after just 3 minutes taking many by surprise. Two of the guys, Felix and Nik, were too strong, just edging out several of the girls for the first sprint after some early moves by the young and ambitious members of the NoNames. The pace eased up after that effort as everyone got their breath back again, although a few riders were off the back of the peloton by that stage and couldn't quite manage to get back on. The second prime came at the halfway point of the race and this time Caitlin held off the rest of the field to take the points from the men. The main bunch stayed together for the remainder of the race with no one successful at breaking away. A fast finish down the hill saw Felix, the sole member of his team; comfortably outsprint the rest of the field to take the double points and the overall win over the remaining teams. JCs Just two starters for the winter JCs event, 9 year old Jericho Genders-Dibden and his 5 year old brother Paul. Both boys rode really well in the chilly air, with Jericho setting a flying time for his ½ lap ITT, but Paul keeping something in reserve for his second ITT. Paul actually had a higher average speed for the longer race than he did for the shorter one! Well done boys.
