'Col de Noire'

With the Tour de France peloton having reached Le Grand-Bornand in the French Alps some eight hours earlier (watched by many in Canberra overnight) and 12 hours before the Tour tackles a succession of gruelling hills on the way to Tignes, Canberra riders lined up to conquer Black Mountain. Some very fast starts were recorded by riders with the aim of knocking off the early pinch before the mid-section and the couple of difficult stretches before the top. Adair Ferguson (with an overall winning time of 10 minutes and 54 seconds), Tara O'Brien and Gracie Elvin in the women's and Stephen Bomball (with an overall winning time of 8 minutes and 19 seconds), Graeme Allbon, and Angus Harding in the men's timed the early assent well to ensure enough was in reserve for a fast finish. At the two-thirds mark riders were greeted with a layer of fog which persisted to the top of the mountain. One rider commented that the fog, far from being a mental barrier, spurred them on as he tried to keep the rider in front still visible. Another summed up the race with an expression that said "that was cold, that was tough, and I'm glad its over but that was good".

The race handicap was taken out by Gracie Elvin for the women in a time of 8 minutes and 30 seconds followed by Adair Ferguson and Tara O'Brien, and for the men, Angus Harding took out first place in a time of 6 minutes and 44 seconds followed by Ivar Nell and Daniel Green.

At about 10:15 am the temperature was still hovering around zero degrees! Well done to all riders and those who came out to watch on a cold and overcast Canberra morning.
