It was a beautiful morning for racing in Melbourne; not too hot, and not much wind. Sixty riders rolled out in A Grade - or to be more accurate, fifty-nine rolled out and one attacked out of the start chute! The bunch is ready for Brendan Rowbotham's (SHM Cycles) early attacks now, but his opening surge set the tone for a fast paced race.

Despite a number of breaks by Danny Kah, Ryan Kelly (Pro-Motion Bicycles) and Matt Shea (Inexa Race Frames), the presence of a big Promains contingent at the head of the bunch kept the field mostly together. If one of the Promains squad went up the road, and the chase stalled, then Michael Gallagher (VIS) could be relied on to close the gap.

A move in the last five minutes containing Paul Mason (Pro-Motion) and Kah opened the biggest gap of the day, but a determined lead out by Warren Knevitt (O'Mara Cycles) and Leigh De Luca (Jamis) saw the sprinters overhaul Mason in the finishing straight.

16 year old junior star Pete Johnstone (Inexa/Subito Cycles) capped off preparations for the Youth Olympics with his third win of the season, holding out Dylan Boone, Rowbotham and Andrew Stalder (Promains).

Lisa Friend (Drapac-Porsche) tried an early break in the B Grade race, but was quickly chased down. The counter attack by Boon Chia, Richard Cormick (Datacom/Burnley Finance), Michael Thomas (aboc Cycle Coaching) and Phil McNeill had more success, and stayed away for ten minutes before Tess Downing (Drapac-Porsche) led the bunch back up.

At the half way mark, Bruce Will and Martin Bole attacked, joined by Glenn O'Rourke, but once again the bunch was close behind. Michael Chiller opened a big lead ten minutes from time, and was joined after two laps by Dennis Bowen-Day, O'Rourke, Gary Simondson, Matt Collins, Aaron Pitt and Richard Fuessel, but the group didn't combine well enough to hold off the chase.

O'Rourke tried again at two to go, chased by Cam Rotter (Datacom/Burnley). At the bell, Bole had caught and passed both and looked to be heading to the win before Ballarat's Luke Jones shot from the bunch in the back straight to overhaul the leader and cruise to the win. Bole hung on for second, with the bunch led home by mountain biker Steve Martin and Darren Sayers (Rapido Cycles). Nicole Whitburn (Mainline Cycles), fresh from her top ten finish at Tursday's Australian Time Trial Championship, took the women's sprint, ahead of Nikki Matthews and Lisa Friend.

An early attack in C Grade from up and coming juniors Calvin Watson (TCR) and Oliver Le Grice (O'Mara) was joined by Dominic McGrath and the newly promoted Peter Kotsiris (SHM). Watson and Le Grice went the distance, with Watson sprinting to the win, while the chasers were led home by Alex Lockie and Eddie Raffoul. Radelle Berriman finished strongly with the chase group to take the women's prize.

Kotsiris earned his promotion with a last lap attack to win D Grade, after David Williams late effort was reeled in. Simon Clark led the bunch home ahead of Phil Stanton, while Leah Paterson sprinted home fourth overall, to also take the women's prize ahead of Nana Jernstrom and Livia Gluchowska.

Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue every Tuesday evening at Sandown Raceway. Entry is via the Sandown Road entrance (Melways map 80 B6), from 6pm, with all grades racing at 6.30. Sundays are at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80 B2). B, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and C Grade ride at 10am. Please note there is no racing on the Sunday of the Australia Day long weekend, January 28th.

All holders of 2007 Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20. Licenses are now available at all CCCC events. All returning riders must resume in the grade they last raced in, unless prior arrangement has been made.

For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts novice racing clinics within the E Grade race at Glenvale Crescent. For further details, go to www.carnegiecycling.com.au.
