The first race at Glenvale for the new year was a quiet one, with the threat of rain, and the lure of watching Robbie McEwen and co at the Bay Crits keeping numbers down to 130 riders. A Grade saw the bunch split into three groups after the early attack from Paul Mason and Matt Shea (Inexa Race Frames) was reeled in. Eight riders made the front group: Warren Knevitt (O'Mara Cycles), Michael Gallagher (VIS), Steve Robb (CBD Cycles), Dale Woonton (Hillman Cycles), James Shepherdson (Datacom/Burnley Finance), Steele Van Hoff, Dylan Boone (SHM) and Guy Green. The two chase groups eventually combined, but weren't able to peg back the leaders, who eventually finished 40 seconds clear. Michael Gallagher did his best to split the front group in the final laps, but wasn't able to shake off the fast finishers, with Knevitt flying up the right hand gutter to take the win ahead of Boone and Green. Richard Cormick was the first to liven things up in the B Grade bunch, before Ben Sanders (Peninsula Star) raced away to a 12 second lead after ten minutes. After Sanders sat up, a flurry of attacks took place until Rohan Ware and Martin Bole established a break. Russell Newnham (Pro-Motion Bicycles) jumped across from a small chase group followed a few laps later by Josh Morrison (Datacom). Calls for some help at the front of the bunch were met with the rule 1 from the Datacom race manual "only stupid people roll turns in races", and the break was away for good. Newnham lost contact with the leaders, leaving three to sprint for the win, with Morrison too good for Bole and Ware. Colin Morris led the bunch home, with Michelle Murrell taking the first woman prize. C Grade saw an unsuccessful solo break by Daniel Lewis-Toakley and then a late move from Glenn Janetzki, Radelle Berriman and Chrisabel Prischl caught at three to go, before the inevitable bunch sprint. Mark Kinzett and Anthony Vaughan took the top two spots, and both will now move to B Grade after their recent successes. Calvin Tulloch and Lewis-Toakley filled the minor places, with Shannon McCurley and Prischl the leading women. Ike Collings made a late break in D Grade, but was chased down in the closing stages. Sitting at the rear of the pack at the bell, the waters parted, allowing him a clear path back to the front of the bunch, and he was able to sprint to the win on his 46th wedding anniversary, ahead of new comer Adam King, Alex Rigo and Roger Lancaster (Cadbury). Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue every Tuesday evening at Sandown Raceway. Entry is via the Sandown Road entrance (Melways map 80 B6), from 6pm, with all grades racing at 6.30. Sundays are at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80 B2). B, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and C Grade ride at 10am. All holders of 2007 Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20. Licenses are now available at all CCCC events. All returning riders must resume in the grade they last raced in, unless prior arrangement has been made. For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts novice racing clinics within the E Grade race at Glenvale Crescent.
