Great weather with clear skies and a relatively still night saw another huge field roll out at Sandown. For the first time in months, the B Grade field was the biggest of the night thanks in part to eight of the Raleigh - Lifeforce Creations girls joining five local girls: world number one Nicole Cooke opted to sharpen up for the Geelong Tour and World Cup with another hit out in A Grade. Before the half way mark, the large SHM Cycles contingent began to stamp its mark on the A Grade race, with Matt Chessum joining Aiden McInernay (Fitzroy Cycles) on the attack. The pair were caught by the seventy rider field, but he next move of note saw team captain Peter Barnett join the inform rider for the Promains squad, Andrew Stalder, to open a ten second lead. Pat Shaw (VIS) tried to cross the gap, but only succeeded in setting up a springboard for Matt Chessum (SHM) to join the leaders, with Shaw left plugging away in a chase group containing McInernay, Dale Woonton, Vaughan Bowman (Le Tour Cycles), Nick Palecek (Richmond Cyclery), Paul Mason (Pro-Motion) and Anthony Smith (Promains). With three laps remaining, the two lead groups joined, and two chase groups had split from the main field. The first contained Danny Kah (SHM), Murray Spink (Giant), Matt Jensen (Specialized Total Rush), Shaun Gatter (Salter Cycles), Mark Kelly and Rhys Smith (Brunswick Street Cycles); and the second Jason Tepper (BSC), Nick Culvenor, Simon Shaw (Nepean Cycles), Brendan Rowbotham (SHM), Justin Davis (OMara Cycles) and Simon Bone. By the penultimate lap, only Gatter, Kah and Spink remained committed to the chase of the lead group. Stalder attacked the lead group before the bell to begin the final lap with only Chessum, Bowman and Pat Shaw for company, and then chased down Chessums attack on the final climb to take the sprint win ahead of Shaw and the SHM rider. Kahs never say die attitude saw him overhaul the remnants of the lead group on the final lap to finish fifth, ahead of McInernay and Mason. With seventy-three riders, anything but a bunch sprint would have been a major upset in B Grade, but that didnt stop many riders doing their best to break things up, including Glen Janetzki, Ema Rickards (Raleigh) and Peta Mullens (VIS) in the early stages. Raleigh team leader Priska Doppmann joined Michael Vogt (Melbourne Bicycle Centre) on the attack with ten minutes remaining, and Richard Cormick (Datacom - Burnley Finance) tried his lap next time round, but the big bunch was never far behind. The final attack saw Doppmann join Rick Jones (Datacom) with one lap remaining, but as expected, 3.2 kilometres later a wall of riders charged for the line across the full width of Sandowns wide straight. Mark Whyman emerged from the chaos to win handily, with the camera needed to split the rest. Jarrod Anderson (MBC) took second, from Matt Bishop, Martin Fluendy and Rickards, the top womens finisher. Rounding out the womens places were Jo Kiesonowski (Raleigh), Nicole Whitburn (Mainline Cycles) and Mullens, who had rejoined the field despite a midrace tumble that saw Tanja Slater write off her carbon frame. Young Brent Tomlinson (Hampton Cycles) made another late attempt to escape the sprinters in C Grade, attacking with Ike Collings in the closing stages, and continuing alone for much of the final lap before finally being reeled in. Jarrod Rouhan took the bunch sprint ahead of Anthony Belleville (Croydon Cycleworks), Peter Kotsiris (SHM) and Neale Adams; with Stephanie Coulson the best of the women ahead of Radelle Berriman (Terry Hammond Cycles). There was more success in D Grade for aggressive riders, with a midrace break by Rob Pisano, Grany Boydell, Craig Lia and Jamie Blaker opening a handy lead before being caught on the final lap. Pisano held his position at the front of the bunch, and held on in a tight sprint to take the win ahead of Duncan Wood, David Kefaloukos and Andrew Heraud, with Melissa Nicholls sprinting to the womens win ahead of Anni Jensen (Kathy Watt Cycling) and Andrea Bishop. Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue on Sunday morning races at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2). B, D and E Grades race at 9am, ahead of the $700 Kelly Cycling Womens GP de Glenvale; and A and C Grade starting around 10.45am. Tuesday evenings are at Sandown Raceway. Entry is via the Sandown Road gate from 6pm (Melways map 80 B6), with racing starting at 6.30pm for all grades. Sunday morning races at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2) resume on February 4th, with B, D and E Grades starting at 9am, while A and C Grade ride at 10am.
