Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Peel Cycling ClubRace #12 Rockingham, Western Australia, Sunday February 18, 2007Competition was fierce in the Peel Cycling Criterium Series last Sunday with Phil Diesel adding to his impressive tally of wins in A Grade. In almost perfect conditions, A Grade competitors were immediately under the pump with solo attacks firstly from Brian Buck then Jon OBrien and Diesel. Michael Dowell, Steve Ware and Laurie Longworth looked comfortable to stay in touch as Paul Slocombe and Russell Fryer eventually drifted off the back. However, with 50 mins elapsed and approaching the bell lap the pace intensified before OBrien made a confident move 500 metres from the line. Diesel was quick to react and smartly moved onto his wheel with Dowell and Ware also clambering to join the train. The final 200 metres saw Diesel power on for a decisive win as Dowell clawed his way to take second with 0brien hanging onto third. B Grade competitors were in cruise mode early, but continued strong work up front by Andy Bennett and Paul Lewis rattled the group. Newly promoted youngster Wade Longworth put in a great performance but eventually large gaps opened up as Bennett made a decisive break. Fraser Hanlon was feeling the pinch as Bennett was insight of the line and looked set to record yet another win but Lewis, finding form in his past two outings, put in a mighty effort to pull up alongside Bennett as they hit the line in unison. Race director Roger Wolley could not split the pair while Mitchell Horwood finished third and Longworth fourth. Theo Yates, Bob Norton, Joe Cox, Tom Atkinson and Peter Moyses shared the work load early in C Grade with Cox and Norton pushing the pace at every opportunity. In the later stages with the pace on Moyses hung on to Atkinsons wheel as 'Young Gun' Yates lost contact. Cox in control had the inside running and a clear run to the line to hold out a desperate Norton with Atkinson comfortable in third. In the midweek 2 Up Time Trial Series, paired riders Joe Cox and Jim Matthews struggled in the blustery conditions to record a time well outside their best but hold a commanding lead on the overall points table. Brian Buck and Bob Addy were strong to post an impressive 25min 38sec outing for the 16kms event. The time trial series continues this Wednesday with four races remaining in the series. The next criterium event will be at Baker St. Pinjarra Sunday Feb 25 at 9am . The Jim Thompson Memorial Criterium Cycle Race will be held on Sunday 4th March commencing at 8.30am . The event to be held in Smeaton Way Rockingham is hosted by the local Peel Club with support from the West Coast Masters. The Rockingham City Council are once again major sponsors of this event. Spectators are most welcome.
