Scratch race, Loxton - Sunday, February 11, 2007

Sprinting success at Loxton

15 riders braved windy conditions to compete in a 44km graded scratch race held at Loxton. Riders were divided into four grades and departed as a mass start.

The first lap went by without incident, although the back straight into the headwind certainly took the sting out of the riders legs. All grades kept together for the first lap where a mechanical incident forced Megan Taylor to stop in the pits for repairs forcing her to chase Gordon Lawton.

The second lap saw B and C grades splinter due to the relentless wind. B grade's Wayne Woosnam was dropped and found himself riding the rest of the journey with C grade. Meanwhile C grade had split into two groups with Peter Weston, Ruth Strout and Angelo Ylia leaving behind John Eshman, Lara MacKirdy and Glenn O’Brien.

The finishing straight saw hard sprinting from all grades. A grade's Nigel Willoughby blitzed his fellow A graders with a blistering sprint that Lee Stevens and Matthew Benson could not match. B grade's Mick Gray beat his fellow competitors home with visiting rider Rebecca Ormsby giving him a good run for his money. Peter Weston and Ruth Strout had a good hit out in the sprint with dropped B grader Wayne Woosnam. Although Wayne took line honours the victory for C grade went to Peter Weston, with Ruth Strout a very close second place.

In D grade a determined Megan Taylor caught Gordon Lawton in time for a big hit out for the line. Megan Taylor led out but the wily old Gordon stormed past within the last fifty meters to claim victory.

This Sunday sees Riverland riders travel to Adelaide to take part in the annual Coast-to-Coast ride. This is a 120km course leaving Glenelg, going over Eagle on the Hill and then through to Victor Harbour.
