Riders were split into three grades to compete for line honours on the extended circuit at Monash. It may have been race neutral until the crossroad but Tyler was more than eager to spur them on. Greg Hatcher had an impressive A Grade debut; averaging 38km/hr over the 45-minute event was far from painless. The bunch remained strong for the entire race until the final sprint that saw them split in two. Lee Stevens claimed victory ahead of Nigel Willoughby, Angus Boase followed taking out third. Lead rider of the second bunch went to Greg Hatcher, claiming fifth behind Matthew Benson. Chris Stevens and Mick Gray were forced to chase but were unable to bridge the gap before the finish line. John Eshman had a convincing win over his counter parts with a strong sprint finish ahead of Peter Weston and Ruth Strout. Angelo Ylia had a commanding lead earlier in the race until his fellow grade members reeled him back, relegating him to last place behind Janine Webb. Megan Taylor's luck ran out when a puncture forced her out of the race with less than two to go. Kade Boase and Gordon Lawton competed in C Grade this week but kept it together over the extended circuit. It may well have ended with the junior versus the veteran but pride and that competitive spirit knows no age! Boase won the latest round with Lawton claiming second. Track racing on Sunday may have been somewhat shorter than most weeks but with temperatures set to reach 42 degrees, racing was reduced to three events. Wayne Woosnam claimed victory for the 1000m handicap followed by Peter Evans and Lee Stevens. Angelo Ylia crossed in fourth place ahead of fellow enthusiast, John Eshman. The 15 lap scratch race was the last event before riders escaped from the soaring heat. Stevens claimed line honours ahead of Woosnam and Eshman followed by Ylia claiming fourth. Road racing resumes on Sunday with scratch races to be held at Loxton followed Criterium racing at Monash on Tuesday. Visit www.riverlandcyclingclub.com for further information.
