Graded scratch races in support of Trowbridge

There was generous support for highly respected club rider Tom Trowbridge on Sunday, December 23 when 70 members of the Southern District Veterans and Ladies Cycling Club turned out to race in graded scratch races. Entry fees for the day's racing and a raffle raised sufficient funds to purchase of a tandem for Tom, who was injured in a crash in January this year. Generous support was also received from Bicycle Express, local café Koffee and Snax, as well as club members Kim Thomas and Russell Johnstone in the form of raffle prizes.

A, D and E grades were raced aggressively resulting in winning breakaways whilst the prowess of the sprinters took the day in B, C and F grades.

A new course over 31 km with two laps up Moritz Road provided plenty of opportunity for attacking racing. Dave Kenning in A grade was chasing points for the club consistency trophy and had his eye on the win. He got away early and was soon joined by James Russell and the two showed their form to remain clear of the group winning with a time of 49:25 seconds.

In D grade forceful racing enabled the threesome of Neil Thies, John Amos and Paul Brouwer to take honours. And in E grade, an early dig by Lynette Collins up Moritz Road got her successfully off the front, Chris Mavrangelos, newly returned to racing soon joined her followed by a strong Brian Dey. The trio rode a tight team time trial to stay away successfully from the remaining 11 riders.
