The tough circuit and conditions took their toll on both divisions with several riders failing to finish. A novel feature of this race was that most of the limit bunch in Division One was disqualified for inadvertently taking a short cut. Division One drew a field of 30 riders, the chopping block bunch forming a tight unit and working well together to catch those in front and holding off the chasing scratch riders. Russell Johnstone had enough left in reserve and judged the sprint perfectly to draw away from the group to take out the win, closely followed by Neville Elliott and Mark Yaeger for the minor placings. A strong pace set by the front markers took its toll in Davison Two but Geoff Hillman (off scratch) showed his depth of experience by coming forward and winning 39 seconds clear of fellow scratchie Jason Letherby and Calvin Smith (chopping block) for third.
